“One of the most frustrating thing to deal with after my diagnosis was having to give up work and my independence. I loved my job and meeting new people, not being able to do that anymore was a real blow.
I have an amazing family who are a huge support to me, but I needed something outside the bubble of family life, something that gave me the ability to meet new people and feel part of a team again. Being a volunteer at the Centre gives me a sense of purpose and there is nowhere else in the world that understands me more. I love feeling useful again and the positivity of staff and service users is infectious.
Karen's work and impact
Karen began volunteering on reception, providing the friendly face to meet and greet visitors. Using her obvious organisation skills she was asked to join the volunteer team in the admin office. Karen now volunteers two days a week. Inputting data, ordering external leaflets for the information area and helping organising data for evaluation of services. Karen is also instrumental to the growing social committee which organises various Centre events though the year.
